Development Roadmap
Petrochemical Industry Development Roadmap
As a development organization, the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) has put together the "Petrochemical Industry Development Roadmap to 2027” in a bid to perform its policy making and macro-planning tasks to materialize the goal of sustainable development of the petrochemical industry and also to achieve the upstream goals of the industry.
In the map, active projects in the framework of two leaps, second and third, and strategic projects are introduced.
2nd Petrochemical Leap
It was initiated back in 2013 and includes 45 projects. So far, 34 projects of the second leap have been commissioned and the remaining 11 projects will come on stream by the end of the current Iranian calendar year to March 20, 2022, to bring the country’s total petrochemical production capacity to 100 million tons per year, an 80% growth compared to 2013.
3rd Petrochemical Leap
It entails 35 projects, the realization of which by 2025, will bring the nameplate production capacity of the industry to 130 million tons per year.
Strategic Projects
These plans include three groups of projects: combined feedstock, propylene and propulsion plants.
Combined Feedstock Plants:
These projects have been defined with the aim of diversifying and creating balance in the production of items, especially aromatics, and simultaneous allocation of ethane and liquid feedstocks, which improve the economy of the projects, while increasing their feasibility. With the realization of these plans by 2027, the shortage of aromatic products needed by domestic industries will be eliminated.
Propylene Production Plans:
These projects have been defined with the aim of developing the propylene chain and providing the required feedstock for downstream projects through the conversion of natural gas (GTP) and methanol (MTP) to propylene. Likewise, the country’s propylene production capacity is expected to quadruple by 2027.
Propulsion Projects:
Assessment of the production process of major petrochemicals in the coming years, domestic and global markets of the items and analyzing the needs of downstream industries are indicative of the fact that in the coming years, completing the value chain of basic petrochemical products will be a requirement for petrochemical industry development. According to the "Strategy of Petrochemical Industry Development Based on Value Chain Development", the petrochemical propulsion plans have been defined and identified in 6 production chains of methanol, propylene, ethylene, benzene, butylene and urea which are up for grabs by investors. With the realization of these plans, the feedstock of complementary industries will be provided.
