Strategic Plans for the 3rd Leap in the Petrochemical Industry
3rd Leap: 2025
After materialization of the active plans of the second and third leaps, the third-leap strategic plans for petrochemical industry development have been defined with the aim of continuing the smart development of the industry and completing the value chain, reducing imports, increasing diversity in the petrochemical product portfolio and developing and supporting downstream petrochemical industries. The following are envisaged in development of the projects:
• Prioritize the supply of feedstock required by downstream industries
• Use basic petrochemicals such as methanol as feedstock
• Reduce petrochemical imports
• Diversify the product portfolio
The strategic plans of the third leap of the petrochemical industry include the following:
Combined feedstock plans
Propylene production plans
Propulsion Projects
Combined feedstock Plans: These projects have been defined with the aim of diversifying and creating balance in the production of items, especially aromatics, and simultaneous allocation of ethane and liquid feedstocks, which improve the economy of the projects, while increasing their feasibility. With the realization of these plans by 2027, the shortage of aromatic products needed by domestic industries will be eliminated.
Propylene production plans: These projects have been defined with the aim of compensating for the shortage of propylene in the country, developing the propylene chain and providing the required feedstock for downstream projects through the conversion of natural gas (GTP) and methanol (MTP) to propylene. Likewise, the country’s propylene production capacity is expected to quadruple by 2027.
Propulsion Projects: These projects are defined in five chains of propylene, methanol, ethylene, butane and urea; with the realization of these projects, while providing feedstock for downstream industries, the sales value of the produced items will increase significantly.
1. The required feedstock of the above five chains will be supplied from different routes:
Propylene chain feedstock: The propylene produced by strategic propylene production plans (PDH/MTP) which is planned based on the use of methanol, propane and in some cases natural gas.
2. Methanol chain feedstock: from the methanol produced in petrochemical complexes.
3. Ethylene chain feedstock: from the ethylene produced in petrochemical complexes.
4. Feedstock required for benzene chain: From extraction of benzene from pyrolysis gasoline of existing complexes and combined feedstock plants
5. Feedstock required for urea chain: from urea and ammonia produced in petrochemical complexes
