Residential, commercial, non-major industries 46.4% 332.7 MMSCD

Iran, with its rich gas resources, has a great advantage for the efficient and productive use of this God-given resource. In 2020, an average of 717 million cubic meters of gas was produced and consumed per day. The residential and commercial sectors with 46% and power plants with 25% share are in the first and second positions of natural gas consumption. The petrochemical industry, with 45 million cubic meters per day of natural gas consumption as feed and fuel, has a 7% share in consumption of the item.

Natural Gas Consumption in the Petrochemical Industry

  • Fuel: 57% (36 MMSCD)
  • Feedstock: 43% (26.5 MMSCD)

Year Number of Petrochemical Complexes Fuel and Feedstock (MTY) Equivalent of Crude Oil Barrels per day (BOE/d)
1399 63 39.3 MTY 992,000 BOE/d
1400 (Realization of the Second Leap) 77 72 MTY 1,600,000 BOE/d
1404(Realization of the Third Leap) 103 85 MTY 2,000,000 BOE/d

The increase in the share of the petrochemical industry in consumption of oil and gas resources indicates realization of the transition from crude sales and production of wealth and employment in the country. In the coming years, the share of feed and fuel allocated to the petrochemical industry will increase from an equivalent of 962,000 crude barrels per day to 2 million barrels per day of crude oil equivalent. This will be the result of full realization of all the ongoing projects of the second and third leaps of the petrochemical industry by 2021 and 2025, respectively.
